During the first 9 months of this year, China imported 18.61m tons of steel products, a 47.98% increase from the same period last year. Meanwhile, China exported 3.1372m tons of steel, up 7.79% from the same period the year before. In the first 9 months, domestic steel supply increased by 23% compared with that in the same period last year. In this connection, China's import of major furnace charges in the first 9 months increased significantly from the year before, with import of ferro-alloy and pig iron increasing by 237.28% and 158.76% respectively. Exports and imports of major steel raw material are listed below:
Iron Ore: During Jan-Sep of 2002, China imported 83.14m tons of iron ores, up 23.94% from the same period of last year; meanwhile, China exported 6297 tons of iron ore, an increase of 45.61% from the year before.
Coke: The exports of coke during Jan-Sep totals 9.8108m tons, down by 6.86% from the same period of last year. Meanwhile, China exported 9.01m tons of coke coal.
Pig Iron: In the first 9 months, China imported 590,000 tons of pig iron, which increased largely by 158.76% from the same period of last year; export volume reached 242,600 tons with a decrease of 59.35%.
Scrap: The total imports of scrap during the first 9 months reached 6.26m tons, a decrease of 13.76% compared with that in the same period last year. In breakdown, ferrous scrap imports through common trade terms accounted for 4.71m tons with average price of USD126.82/ton.
Carbon Electrode: The total imports of carbon electrode during Jan-Sep soared to 1.1676m tons, an increase of 959.70% from the year before. Total exports in the same period decreased by 49.21% to 615,900 tons.
Ferro-alloy: China exported 939,000 tons ferro-alloy during the first 9 months, an increase of 1.27% from the year before. In the same time, total imports reached 68,300 tons, up 237.28% from the same period last year.
