According to the newest statistics, China¨s
crude steel production continued the upward trend in the past months, with a total
production figure of 15,121,700 tons for May. Representing a 5.57% increase
over April 2002, the figure is also 26.05% higher than that in May 2001.
Year-to-date (YTD) figures at 70,179,300 tons also indicate a 20.44%
increase compared with the same period last year.
Of the total production, finished steel products accounted for 16,466,400
tons, up 21.42% from the year before and 3.12% from the previous month. YTD
figures at 75,295,800 tons also show a 20.26% increase over the same period
last year. In the breakdown by items, merchant bars totaled 4,698,100 tons,
up 20.94% from a year ago. YTD figures at 21,306,100 tons increase by 25.73%
from the same period last year. Similarly, rail products 162,600 tons, up
3.7% and YTD figures (790,800 tons) up 33.94%; wire rods totaled 2,993,800
tons, up 20.34% and YTD figures (14,092,100 tons) up 20.98%; medium & heavy
plates totaled 2,149,200 tons, up 23.03% and YTD figures (10,082,300 tons)
up 19.7%; sheet products totaled 1,976,300 tons, up 19.86% and YTD figures
(9,027,700 tons) up 10.99%; strip products totaled 1,172,600 tons, up 36.89%
and YTD figures (4,748,900 tons) up 23.29%; seamless pipes totaled 507,700
tons, up 17.80% and YTD figures (2,464,900 tons) up 20.64%; welded pipes
totaled 572,600 tons, up 6.45% and YTD figures (2,392,200 tons) up 10.20%.
