According to the latest statistics, China's crude steel production of March 2003 continued the upward trend set in the past months, with a total production of 17,024,600 tons, representing a 18.53% increase from the same period of last year. The Year-to-date
(YTD) figure was set at 48,329,200 tons, up 18.12% from the same period of last year.
Of the total production, finished steel products accounted for 18,254,700 tons, up 14.87% from same period last year. YTD figures at 50,558,200 tons also show a 16.57% increase over the same period last year. In the breakdown by items, rail products 144,400 tons, down 13.01% and YTD figures (396,800 tons) up 14.13%; wire rods totaled 3,057,800 tons, up 3.19% and YTD figures (8,782,800 tons) up 7.08%; medium & heavy plates totaled 2,397,500 tons, up 13.27% and YTD figures (6,965,300 tons) up 18.16%; sheet products totaled 1,943,800 tons, up 6.06% and YTD figures (5,890,700 tons) up 12.32%; strip products totaled 1,665,700 tons, up 65.3% and YTD figures (4,478,500 tons) up 62.16%; seamless pipes totaled 568,500 tons, up 6.54% and YTD figures (1,509,200 tons) up 6.73%; welded pipes totaled 646,300 tons, down 3.71% and YTD figures (1,771,400 tons) up 17.2%.
